Red Bull Night Riders Go Off In Atlantic City For Second Straight Year
Words by EXPN.com's Jon Coen
Atlantic City is one of those places that exude bravado, sex, and money. It's the kind of place that makes rational people do things they might not otherwise, like indulge past their limits, bet the mortgage on a roll of the dice, head into the room "behind the black curtain," or get whipped at an oncoming wave at ridiculous speeds from behind a jet ski - in the dark. Red Bull Night Riders Returns To Jersey Shore For Late-Night Tow-At Session
Because launching into the stratosphere during the day is far too easy--and normal--come August 15, 24 of the East Coast's best aerialists will be taking to the forbidding water (and air) of Atlantic City for a bout of late-night tow-ats, frontside grabs, and inevitably some spectacular wipe-outs.
WHAT: Red Bull Night Riders is competitive surfing experience for 24 east coast surfers under a very unique circumstance - being towed at a wave at night. Surfers form their own teams of two, one ski driver and one surfer. Each surfer on the team of two gets two tow-ats for their chance to get the biggest air and turn the best trick.
WHERE: Atlantic City, Caesar's Pier
WHEN: August 15, 2008 - Dusk
WHO'S GOING: Andrew Gesler, Jamie Moran, Sam Hammer, Frank Walsh, Raven Lundy, Lucas Rogers, Jason Reagan, Ben McBrien, Matt Keenan, Randy Townsend, Sean Kilarney, TJ Guimela, Steve O'Hara, Mike Stanek, Mike Paugh, Adam Coates, Wil Skudin, Brett Barley, Ian Bloc, Zach Humpries, Rob Kelly, Chris Kelly, Mike Gleason, Adam Holloway, Billy Hume, Jeff Myers, Jamie Risser, Greg Levy, Mark Driscoll and Jamie Hosker.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW: Teams will compete in three different categories.
1. Best Trick: Will be judged by a combination of the biggest air, degree of difficulty in the trick, and landing the air and surfing away.
2. Amplitude: The surfer who goes the biggest, even if he doesn't land it.
3. Gouge: The hardest, strongest, most powerful turn at high speed after being towed by the ski.
Note: The surfers compete as teams and the best overall team (each surfer drives then they swap and he surfs) takes first.

Cribs: Nantucket Night School Style
What Is Night School?
Several of the best aerialists from North Carolina to Massachusetts stepped off the gangway leading to a cobblestone street, lined with charming storefronts and blossoming cherry trees. The surfers may have looked out of place among Nantucket's old-money crowd with pink collars and tiny dogs (some in strollers), but this was actually the perfect destination. They were met in the parking lot, and shuttled off to a remote beach on the south side of the Island. There they found a tow-at surfer's paradise--a pair of isolated cedar-shaked houses, a beach with four Red Bull jet-skis just waiting to be launched, and the kind of solitude to master the art of towing without disrupting another surfer for miles.
