THEY CALL ME BRUCE
For those of you who don’t know, Bruce Irons is a surfer who could very well be the coolest cat to ever freefall backwards into a death-pit at Backdoor Pipeline. And yes, if you polled anyone from Joe-teenager to Kelly Slater, Bruce would be on the top of every “favorite surfer” list you’d get. Why does everybody love Bruce Irons so much? Is it his rock ‘n roll sneer in the face of death bombs at places like Teahupo’o or Pipeline? Is it his cat-like air-impresario abilities at beachbreaks around the globe? Is it his essence that simply telegraphs coolness? It is all of these things that makes Bruce a fan and peer favorite, and it is these things that could very well be the reason Bruce Irons is a hot commodity, not only to the surf media, but to mainstream media, as Bruce has graced covers of Outside, Men’s Health, and even been featured in Rolling Stone. A surfer in Rolling Stone? More, like a rock star that just happens to surf. All this from a guy who even teaches stars how to surf, as Bruce did for MTV’s “Kelly Slater Celebrity Surf Invitational,” where Bruce helped give surf lessons to Ashlee Simpson and Jack Osborne.
GROWING UP IN THE FIRE
Many may wonder how could this guy get so damn good at surfing. Of course he has tons of natural talent, the backing of supportive parents, and insane waves in his hometown of Hanalei, Kauai, but the major factor could be the intense competitive nature of his relationship with three-time-world champ and brother, Andy Irons. “We battled so much as kids,” laughs Bruce. “I didn’t really care about surfing against anyone else except Andy. Every contest we did, every time we surfed together—we’d just push each other to be that much better. I’m thankful that we grew up together and I know it helped both of us.”
MAKING HISTORY
As a show of his intense competitive spirit and prowess, in 2004 Bruce Irons did what only a handful of surfers have done in history, winning the legendary Quiksilver In Memory Of Eddie Aikau event—the world’s most prestigious surf event. To add to his 2004 list of challenges, Bruce faced near elimination from his coveted spot on the World Tour. Through sheer guts and a make-it or break-it mind frame, Bruce powered his way to the finals of the 2004 Pipe Masters, and solidified his spot on the World Championship Tour—a storybook ending to a challenging year which was all caught on celluloid for Bruce’s very own feature film, “The Bruce Movie,” which happened to take home three Surfer Magazine awards at the Surfer Poll Awards in 2005.
ROCK and ROLL REBEL
Of course, Bruce (pardon the cliché) is a rock star surfer who seemingly does not care about much. Truth be told, though—he does. “I want to win the world championship, why the fuck would I be on tour if I didn’t,” he snarls in typical Bruce fashion. “Other than that, I just want to get barreled.” That’s how Bruce is, a brutal competitor on one hand, and a pure surfer on the other. His personality on land also mirrors his personality in the water—you really never know what he’s going to do. “He’s unpredictable like a rattlesnake,” laughs older brother Andy. You can find this out for yourself if you ever get the chance to go golfing with Bruce. “Don’t fucking talk in my backswing,” he yells half jokingly before throwing his golf club at you. “I hate losing!” He yells again. His competitive drive always gets him heated, but don’t let his pissed off demeanor fool you; he’s more likely joking around. To his friends, he’s known as a witty bastard with a razor tongue. He could easily hold court at the Friars Club roasting friends, and woe to thee who stands on the other side of his comedic cut-down arsenal.

Been golfing and fishing a lot lately, and just kind of cruising on Kauai. The waves have been good here this winter. The whole North Shore's been crap, but we've had a couple of days over here. I don't know, other than that, I guess we got a few days at Pipe during the Backdoor Shoot-Out. Heading for Australia soon, back on the road.
